Mike McCarthy appeared uninterested in adding the former NFC East rival to his quarterback room. The Dallas Cowboys (3-7) are experiencing their worst 10-game start since 2020, when they also began 3-7.
Both seasons share a common thread: quarterback Dak Prescott suffered season-ending injuries—fracturing his ankle in 2020 and tearing his hamstring in 2024.
This season, the Cowboys have turned to Cooper Rush, an eight-year veteran, in place of Prescott. Despite back-to-back losses by a combined score of 68-16 against the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans in Weeks 10 and 11,
Daniel Jones Released: |
Dallas has stuck with Rush as their starter for Week 12 against the Washington Commanders, a game that also reunites them with former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, now Washington's head coach.
Backup Trey Lance, the 49ers' 2021 third overall pick, will also have packages in place for the game. Additionally, veteran Will Grier serves as the third-string, emergency quarterback.
With the New York Giants releasing Daniel Jones after benching him for Tommy DeVito, the Cowboys, along with the other 31 NFL teams, have an opportunity to add the six-year quarterback, who has ample starting experience.
CBS Sports asked McCarthy about the possibility of adding Jones just before Dallas faces New York on Thanksgiving Day in Week 13, offering a potentially dramatic Thanksgiving storyline. However, McCarthy downplayed the idea.
"I've never really been in the business of looking at players based on the team they are released from, especially with the timing of the next game," McCarthy stated during a conference call on Friday.
"He was a prospect I really liked coming out, but we kind of have our head down right now and are really focused on working with the guys we have here."
Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones echoed McCarthy’s stance when asked about the possibility of bringing Jones to Dallas.
"No, I think we're in good shape at our quarterback spot," Jones said. "We think Cooper [Rush] gives us the best chance to win right now. And certainly, we still want to see some.
We'll kind of see how the season goes here. We still really want to see [Trey] Lance and like what he brings to the table. And then, of course, long-term, we all know we made our commitment to Dak [Prescott] for the long term."
Jones, selected sixth overall by the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Duke, peaked in 2022 under head coach Brian Daboll, posting career highs in passing yards (3,205), passing yards per attempt (6.8), and passer rating (92.5).
He threw just five interceptions that season as the Giants went 9-6-1 and made the playoffs. Jones led New York to an NFC Wild Card win against the Minnesota Vikings, throwing for 301 yards, two touchdowns, and adding 78 rushing yards.
However, Jones has struggled with turnovers and inconsistency throughout his career. With 73 turnovers since entering the NFL, he ranks fifth-most in the league.
His 84.3 career passer rating is second-worst among 28 quarterbacks with at least 1,500 pass attempts since 2019, ahead of only Sam Darnold.
This season, the Giants have started 2-8, with Jones ranking last in both touchdown passes (eight) and passer rating (79.4) among quarterbacks with at least 10 starts.
